School meetings can feel intimidating. This guide explains, in family-friendly language, what IEPs and 504 plans are and how to walk into meetings feeling more prepared.
IEPs vs. 504 plans
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a plan for students who qualify for special education services. It includes goals, services, and supports tailored to your child.
A 504 plan is different — it provides accommodations (like extra time or sensory breaks) for students who need adjustments to access learning, even if they don't qualify for special education.
Preparing for an IEP meeting
Ask for the draft documents ahead of time so you can read them without feeling rushed. Write down your questions and the top two or three things you want your child's team to know.
You can bring anyone you'd like to the meeting — a partner, an advocate, or a trusted friend. You do not have to sign anything on the spot.
Collaborating with the school team
Consistency across home, therapy, and school helps children make steadier progress. With your permission, ABA Prep can share strategies or attend meetings to support alignment.
Approach conversations as a team working together for your child — even when you disagree. Written follow-ups after meetings can help everyone stay on the same page.

- What data supports the recommendations being made?
- How will I be updated between meetings?
- How can therapy and school align on strategies?
