Communication and Daily Living Skills
The strongest skills grow inside everyday moments — mealtime, getting dressed, playing outside. Here are gentle ways to support communication and daily living skills at home, alongside your child's therapy team.
Supporting communication
Communication is more than talking. It includes gestures, pictures, signs, devices, facial expressions, and words. Whatever your child uses to share what they need, you can build on it.
Try narrating what you and your child are doing ("You're pouring the milk!"), pausing to give them a chance to respond, and honoring their attempts — even small ones — with a warm reaction.
Building daily living skills
Daily living skills — washing hands, putting on shoes, brushing teeth — become independence over time. Breaking each skill into small steps and celebrating each one keeps children motivated.
Visual schedules, checklists, or simple songs can help make routines predictable and calm, especially at transition times like morning or bedtime.
Routines that support the whole family
Predictable routines help every family member feel steadier. Choose one or two moments of the day where a small change could make a big difference, and let your BCBA help you plan them.
Give yourself grace on the harder days. Progress isn't a straight line — it's a series of tries, resets, and small wins.
Practical tips for parents
- Pick one skill to focus on for a couple of weeks rather than many at once.
- Use short, clear language paired with a gesture or picture.
- Model calmly what you want to see — kids read your tone before your words.
- Share what's working with your BCBA so it can be built into sessions.
