For Caregivers

Caregiver Resources

Caring for a child with autism can be joyful and demanding, often on the same day. This guide gathers ideas, reminders, and community connections to support the adults doing the caring.

Taking care of you

You matter, too. Even small pockets of rest — a walk, a phone call with a friend, a quiet cup of coffee — help you show up for your child with more patience and presence.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, that's a signal, not a failure. Reach out to your child's team, your own primary care provider, or a trusted mental health professional.

Finding community

Other parents get it in a way few people can. Local support groups, online communities, and events (like those in our Community & Autism Events calendar) can make the road feel less lonely.

There's no one right way to be an autism parent. Find the people who make you feel understood and lean in.

Talking with family and friends

Loved ones often want to help but aren't sure how. Sharing a short overview of your child's strengths, needs, and how visits work best can turn well-meaning relatives into strong allies.

It's okay to set limits on advice, and it's okay to accept help when it's offered.

Practical tips for parents

  • Keep a short list of "easy asks" you can hand to anyone who says "how can I help?"
  • Protect at least one small block of time a week that is just for you.
  • Save one calming activity for hard evenings — a show, a bath, a favorite playlist.
  • Remind yourself: doing your best is enough.
